And So This Is Christmas

And so this is Christmas... as John Lennon sings. Yes this is nearly Christmas and I am busy making Christmas cards, preparing for a visit to celebrate my granddaughters 5th birthday and trying to finalize shopping for a few Christmas gifts but the one thing I love to do during this season is hand make a few gifts.
Here were a few of my Christmas cards before we got them addressed and out the door.

Just before heading out for Christmas at Nate's house we had a surprise birthday party for my niece. I had a fun idea for her gift since through the summer she and her family do quite a bit of camping. I had seen this camp bucket idea the year before and in fact had made one design for my DIL for her birthday. They also like to camp during the summer months. Hers turned out cute and I was excited to do this one for my sweet niece.

A fun project I created for my grandson Leo who is so-ooo into BLACK PANTHER anything right now... I made a cute design for a long sleeve red shirt.

I made up this Lavender Poppyseed Sugar Scrub for a few friends and business partners that was inspired by some I had purchased at an event here in the fall. It was so delightful I decided to give my version a go. It turned out so nice.

So this is my view out the window as I am finishing up all my last minute projects....I love this view!

I did finally get to make some fun foods. We made Snickerdoodle Christmas cookies while we were at Nate's and I made some of my
Breakfast French Toast Casserole. I also made Scalloped Potatoes and Nate cooked some Prime Rib from a recipe he found on the web. Everything tasted yummy.

Celebrations and Remembering During 2020's Covid-19 Epidemic

Just last week when the world was reflecting on the somber events of 911 another form of remembrance happens in our family.

My sister Colli was born on September 11 and we sisters living in Utah have our own event. Each year we gather for lunch at a restaurant of the birthday girls choosing. This year looked different. We met at Colli's home, ordered and picked up lunch and celebrated a milestone, Colli's 60th Birthday! I wanted to say Hurrah!  so I have been looking for something fun and perfectly descriptive of my sister, she is BOLD, she is COLORFUL and definately looks GOOD so here is my creation. I made it with my Cricut and it is only my 2nd HTV project...I was excited that it is so representational of Colli... 😄

Social Distancing, Creating With Friends and My Cricut

In this time of "social distancing" when so many are learning to adapt, what have you been doing in life?
Do you find yourself quite comfortable being home more? For those who view their home as a comfort and a haven perhaps you like me are swimming in new ideas, whether it be thinking about what I will do when I am able to get out more or in ideas for my next NEW endeavor. I confess, I am a creative junkie. Even when I'm not creating I am looking for new ideas... yes I am a Youtube and Pinterest junkie. I am fortunate to have sweet friends who are always on the lookout for  opportunities to help me in my addiction to create, ha-ha!.

A while back I updated my old Cricut  which I hardly used to a Cricut Explore Air 2 since these sweet friends bought an extra at a warehouse sale (in case I wanted it ;)

Chip checks out our Italian Soda Bar

The first project I used it for was to help decorate my house when I hosted a WHITE ELEPHANT party after Christmas. Thank you Diane for all the help you gave in cutting the darling little Elephant banner (sorry I don't seem to have a pic) and the signage for my Italian Soda Bar. They turned out soooo cute!

I have been determined to learn how to use  the functions in Cricut Design Space and the settings on the Cricut so I will get better use out of the machine. Lucky for me I have some awesome friends (thank you Diane and Jennifer (you don't know me but yes we're friends ;) I have shared so much time with you both. Because of you and many other youtube friends I already have a very long list of items I want to create and with that in mind I really need to know how to best use this machine!
Here is a part of my list:
  1. HTV some shirts for my grandkiddos (Fiona loves Hamilton The Musical, Luke is so-ooo into gaming), the littles anything Peppa Pig and the older ones I'm still thinking.
  2. A vinyl decal for our wall, a gift for DH, sh-hhhh!
  3. A fun No Solicitors sign for my DIL...any suggestions for a quote?
  4. A pantry project, labels.
  5. A vinyl quote for my craft space wall.
  6. Family Name signs for extended family...a cool Christmas gift!
The list is much longer but it becomes like making resolutions in the New Year so let's just stop there ;)

Since my larger goal right now is to learn how to use  the functions in Cricut Design Space and the settings on the Cricut I have been in Youtube classroom mode. I have found Jennifer Maker to be so helpful, if you read this a huge THANK YOU to you!
Here is some of what I have learned and practiced so far...
  • How to ATTACH things and why I might need to. (Score lines need to be attached to the project you are scoring or it simply won't score on the project ;)
  •  I found that the GROUP/UNGROUP feature is great when editing text to keep it all together.
  • I found out the importance of WELD after I cut out my Soda Bar letters. The script letters each cut separately,ok WELD before cutting.
  • I've played with the SLICE feature and have a project saved in Cricut Design Space.  I learned that Slice only does two layers so if there are more, simplify by FLATTENING...AND once FLATTENED and saved you cannot reverse.
  • I learned the difference between an IMAGE and PATTERN and how to use PATTERNS.
  • SVG defined and how to make my own...this is definitely ongoing.
I've got many more things to learn and I am finding that the best way for me to learn is watch something visual then then do what I watched. All in all, the "shelter at home" directive has certainly created opportunity for me to get familiar with my machine although my counter and kitchen table have been much more cluttered <sigh>...sacrafices have to be made ha-ha!

On Being RESILIENT

OMG Moments Making New Traditions at Thanksgiving

Just looked at the calender and had an OMG moment...Did you know??? It is only 17 days until Thanksgiving?

I'm so excited! This year my son Nathaniel and his children are planning to come, it's the first time having my grandchildren come visit from out of state and I'm on pins and needles! They will meet families of their cousins face to face for the very first time and see Aunties and Uncles that they've not had in their life due to distance.

Oops, change of plans,,,<heavy sigh> my son can't get the time off...so very sad. I know it will be a blast just hanging out but of course I want the traditions we create and the food we eat to be memorable too. I'm still in the planning stages but I thought I'd share my ideas for my Menu...

Brined Turkey
 Carol's YUM Stuffing
Homemade Turkey Gravy
Rolls
Mashed Potatoes
Vegetables
Veggies & Dip
Relish Tray
Fruit medley
 Cranberry Relish
deviled eggs
 Sweet Potatoes
Pumpkin Pie
The newcomer...Pumpkin Cheesecake Trifle looks really yummy!

A few years back it was a great joy to have my dear friend Beverly staying with us for a while. As we talked over food plans for the Thanksgiving celebration she shared a tip...
Brining a turkey guarantees a delicious moist turkey. She and I bought our brine the first year from Williams and Sonoma but honestly it is a simple thing to make your own, I thought you might enjoy the recipe I have since used.

Turkey Brine

"This recipe makes 3 quarts of brine, enough for a 10 to 25 pound turkey. All of the spices and herbs in this recipe add great flavor, if you can't find one for some reason, don't worry, just leave it out.
Ingredients
2/3 cup kosher salt
2/3 cup sugar
6 whole cloves
1 teaspoon juniper berries, crushed
1 teaspoon black peppercorns, crushed
2 teaspoons whole allspice berries, crushed
5 fresh sage leaves
4 sprigs fresh thyme
2 bay leaves
8 cups hot water
4 cups ice water
Plus:
2 turkey size plastic oven bags or brining bags
1 large roasting pan (or a very large bowl)
1 fresh or thawed frozen turkey (12 to 20 pounds)
note: The easiest way to crush whole spices is to use a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder. If you do not have either of these kitchen tools, place the whole spices in a heavy lock-top plastic bag, seal the bag while pressing out all the air, and pound them with the bottom of a small, heavy saucepan until coarsely crushed.
For the Brine:
In a large saucepan, stir together the salt, sugar, cloves, juniper berries, peppercorns, and allspice. Add the sage leaves, thyme, and bay leaves along with the hot water. Stir to combine. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring frequently until the salt and sugar have dissolved. Boil for 3 minutes, then remove from the heat. Add the ice water and stir to cool the mixture. Set aside and let cool to room temperature.
The Method:
Nest 1 plastic oven bag inside the other to create a double thickness. Place the double bag mouth open wide and facing up, in the roasting pan. Fold back the top one-third of the double bag to make a collar (this helps keep the bags open). Place the turkey inside the double bag. Unfold the collar of the double bag and pour the brine over the bird, then add 2 cups of cold water. Draw up the top of the inner bag, squeezing out as much air as possible, and secure it closed with a twist tie. Do the same with the outer bag. Turn the package so the turkey is breast side down in the roasting pan (or very large bowl) and refrigerate for at least 12 hours or up to 24 hours. Turn the turkey 3 or 4 times while it is brining.
Remove the turkey from the brine. Discard the bags, brine, and any cured herbs or spices remaining on the bird. Rinse the turkey under cold water and pat dry with paper towels (sanitize the sink afterwards). Place the turkey back in the roasting pan (or on a rimmed sheet pan that is large enough to hold the turkey) and refrigerate, making sure that it touches nothing else in the fridge, uncovered, for at least 6 hours or up to overnight. This resting period allows the skin of the turkey to dry a bit so it is crisp when roasted. The turkey is now ready to be roasted.

One new tradition for me began a few years ago, recounting things I am grateful for. I'm looking for an idea to help all of us express gratitude together on Thanksgiving Day. If you have an idea for me please share it in the comments

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone

It's a day of remembering, a day of saying Thank You for all that we have, all that life brings us and all the wonderful abundance God has brought into my life. I have been richly blessed...not because everything in life is perfect but because God in His infinate mercy has  given me new life. His forgiveness and free gift of salvation allows me to begin again through the bad and the good.

Today I am thankful for family who come to share thier lives with us. My children live out of state and we only see them when we are able to make the trip. We talked together about thier activities for the day and I smiled as my son described his part; chasing his very active 19 month old son around as he "explored" electric cords and other various accessible and interesting things at the home they visited. I am grateful for their family ties my daughter-in-law's have with thier families,I long to be with them but I am joyful they are happy where they are.

Our celebrated traditions are a way of weaving our memories tightly with our love for one another another. They present us an opportunity to laugh together, serve one another and share in each others joy and sorrow. I feel truely blessed even as I process those melancholy emotions of missing my children, then the JOY of the Lord fills me with appreciation for all that surrounds me.

In case you're interested, our family menu for 2011 included:

Celebrations Potlucks and Crafting

About 4 years ago God and I began a conversation... I definately could not see His point nor His direction at the time. I have learned though that He is capable and patient and willing to continue the work He begins. Our conversation centered around the biblical character Esther and quite honestly I did not have a picture where this conversation would lead me but I was quite sure it was aimed at helping me to grow into a new role in life. It seemed God was useing ths character Esther to help me to find my way and as it is often the case it did not happen overnight, instead it was a lesson here and an opportunity there until finally I found myself taking an active role "leading" in many areas of my life. This may not seem like an odd thing or a difficulty from your perspective but for me it has been a monumental adjustment in life. So what has this to do with Celebrations Potlucks and Crafting? Where I attend church I have felt Gods calling to head up various activities but "leadership" is NOT a comfortable hat, in fact I am much more comfortable in the background helping as support. For years I have struggled with the fear of taking on leadership...but when God begins a work He is faithful isn't He :)
Tomorrow our church women are having a potluck-with merriment, food and sharing to celebrate and remember the story of Esther and the words of her surrogate father..."And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” So who knows the change God has wrought in these few years since He planted a seed in the heart of me? For change to occur in us the pain or discomfort must shift and it did...it has become more painful to see a need and do nothing than to act. Is leadership now suddenly my fortay? The answer lies within...I realize I have become passionate about the need for leadership in every area of life from our church to our business. Our world is desperate for leaders and there it is...I'm finding I CAN take baby steps and I'm finding I can do it. Gee God, you are so-oooo clever! In fact God you are amazing...I'm having fun (most of the time) and it is not nearly as painful as I imagined.
Tomorrow our women will enjoy time together in fellowship, share what they learned from our study of Esther, enjoy creating together and we'll also bring some food gifts for the poor. Its amazing to me that my part in this began four years ago with a conversation with God and me saying I can't!
